Even love does not accomplish what humaneness can for the quality of life. There was a problem adding your email address. But it only took a chapter to realize that I have indeed read this before, probably several times. The narrator tells the story through a series of memories typically lasting two pages. I wouldn't start here, but if your burning through his books, make sure you hit this one. My point in composing such a text is that we have need of new narrative--even non-narrative--narrative forms in order to really understand--or understand a little better--the actual chaos that is the universe--which, in the end, may not be narrative at all.
Not too depressing, but obviously not upbeat. I've always thought this book was a sci-fi novel, and indeed that is how it tends to be classified, but in fact it's nothing of the sort. I want to quote so much; better that you just go and read it for yourself. I'm a Kurt Vonneget fan and want to read all of his books. The story itself, which primarily centers around that accidental shooting and what follows from it, is told by Rudy while sitting in the Grand Hotel Oloffson in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The novel is brilliant.
